ELISAVA CREATES THE FIRST DESIS NETWORK LAB IN SPAIN
Desis Network, the most important social innovation network of the world, encourages the social transformation through design.
Leading figures like Ezio Manzini, founder of the DESIS Network, or John Thackara, world expert in sustainable design take part in this initiative.
Barcelona, November 29th.- The DESIS Lab Elisava has been presented in Barcelona. It is the first lab of the prestigious DESIS Network to open in Spain. Through this pioneering initiative, ELISAVA Barcelona School in Design and Engineering becomes a part of a worldwide network of higher educational centers with studies in design, which explore how this discipline can be an element of society’s transformation, through social innovation and sustainability.
The founder of the DESIS project, Ezio Manzini, took in the presentation at ELISAVA. He is also an emeritus professor at Politecnico di Milano, professor at the University of the Arts in London, and he is currently a guest professor at Tongji University, in Shanghai. Manzini said: “Barcelona is the Hollywood of social innovation”, referring to the great quantity of designers that live here and especially to the privilege of having an administration like the current one, open to experiment with social progress.
Next, and as a starting point of the tasks that DESIS Lab Elisava will carry out, we could enjoy a lecture by John Thackara, one of the top experts in the world of sustainable design, and writer, design theorist and he is also a member of the UK Parliament’s Standing Commission on Design. In relation with his latest book, “How to Thrive in the Next Economy: Designing Tomorrow’s World Today”, Thackara said: “We will make the transformation connected with the planet, not in any other way”. This is how the lecture cycle “Speak in Tongues” of the DESIS Lab Elisava opened, which will have specialists in social innovation of around the world.
From the DESIS Network, ELISAVA is also working on the project “Markets”, based on the food markets, that related to consumption, are very important hubs for their inherited and city values and are perfect to take the pulse of the social tissue. The project is the continuation of an action line initiated some years ago by ELISAVA and Ferran Adrià with food design.
